Understanding Islam: Buddhist Common Sense vs. Western Nonsense

Print Friendly

CBN News (Ibrahim: Islam Unveiled)

A recent New York Times article titled “Extremism Rises Among Myanmar’s Buddhists” offers important lessons on common sense and nonsense.  Written by one Thomas Fuller, it begins by telling of how

After a ritual prayer atoning for past sins, Ashin Wirathu, a Buddhist monk with a rock-star following in Myanmar, sat before an overflowing crowd of thousands of devotees and launched into a rant against what he called “the enemy”—the country’s Muslim minority.  “You can be full of kindness and love, but you cannot sleep next to a mad dog,” Ashin Wirathu said, referring to Muslims. “I call them troublemakers, because they are troublemakers.”

While the article is meant to highlight the supposed “intolerance” of Myanmar’s Buddhists, for those who can read between the lines—or who are familiar with Islamic teachings, history, and current events—it is clear that Buddhists are responding to existential threats posed by the Muslims living among and around them.

Here is the first lesson: unlike the West, Buddhist monks, despite their reputation as devotees of peace, are still able to accept and respond to reality; are still governed by common sense.  Unlike the West, whose sense of reality has been so thoroughly warped by a nonstop media propaganda campaign emanating from ubiquitous TVs and computer screens, conditioning Americans how to think and what to believe, “third world” Buddhist monks are acquainted with reality on the ground.  They know that, left unchecked, the Muslim minority living among them—which began hostilities—will grow more aggressive, a historically demonstrative fact.

As in other countries, the Muslims of Myanmar have engaged in violence, jihadi terror, and rape of Buddhist girls.  And that’s as a minority.  Myanmar’s Buddhists are also cognizant that, in neighboring nations like Bangladesh where Muslims are the majority, all non-Muslims are being ruthlessly persecuted into extinction.  But even in bordering Thailand, where Buddhists are the majority and Muslims a minority, in the south where Muslims make for large numbers, thousands of Buddhists—men, women, and children—have been slaughtered, beheaded, and raped, as separatist Muslims try to cleanse the region of all “infidel” presence. Click here for graphic reports and images of Muslim atrocities committed against Buddhists that may shed light on why Myanmar Buddhists are wary of Muslims.

Accordingly, Wirathu, the “radical” Buddhist monk is quoted in the NYT article as saying: “If we are weak, our land will become Muslim.”  The theme song of his nationalist organization speaks of people who “live in our land, drink our water, and are ungrateful to us”—a reference to Muslims—and how “We [Buddhists] will build a fence with our bones if necessary” to keep supremacist Muslims out.  His pamphlets say “Myanmar is currently facing a most dangerous and fearful poison that is severe enough to eradicate all civilization.”  Another senior and apparently “radical” monk concurs: “The main thing is that our religion and our nationality don’t disappear.”

From here we come to lesson two: if Buddhists understand what is at stake—their entire civilization—the NYT report is a testimony to why the West still cannot face reality.  Fuller’s article carries all the trademarks—moral relativism and pro-Islam bias, and that dangerous mixture of confidence and ignorance—that characterize the mainstream West’s inability to acknowledge and respond to Islam, but rather to sprout sentimental, nonsensical platitudes.

For starters,  Fuller doesn’t seem to comprehend why Myanmar’s Buddhists are worried about disappearing , saying that “Buddhism would seem to have a secure place in Myanmar. Nine in 10 people are Buddhist…  Estimates of the Muslim minority range from 4 percent to 8 percent of Myanmar’s roughly 55 million people while the rest are mostly Christian or Hindu.”

Indeed, in neighboring Thailand Muslims also make for about 4% but have, as mentioned, been engaging in genocide against Buddhists in the south where Muslims are concentrated.  Moreover, an acquaintance with history—real history, not the whitewashed versions currently peddled in American schools—proves that for 14 centuries, Islam has, in fact, wiped out entire peoples and identities: what we today nonchalantly refer to as the “Arab World” was neither Arab and almost entirely Christian in the 7th century, when Islam came into being and went on the jihad. Fuller also seems to miss the significance of the fact that there are more Christians and Hindus in Myanmar than Muslims—yet Buddhist hostility only extends to Muslims.  If indigenous Buddhists are simply becoming nationalistic radicals, as Fuller suggests, how come they are only attacking Muslims, not Christians and Hindus?

Then there is the clear bias.  While regularly decrying the Buddhist treatment of Muslims, including by giving several anecdotes, Fuller does not mention the jihadi terror and murder that Muslims have visited upon Buddhists.  He condemns Buddhists for reportedly displacing some 150,000 nonindigenous Muslims, without seeming to be aware that, all around the Islamic world, Muslims are displacing hundreds of thousands of non-Muslims, leading to a mass exodus of Christians.  If Fuller is unaware of the significance of this fact, Myanmar’s Buddhists are not—hence their very real concerns of being swallowed up by Islam if they don’t act now when they’re in the majority in their own homeland.

But these objective facts are apparently not relevant to the NYT’s readership, which has been more conditioned to subjective talk of “feelings” and other therapeutic nonsense.  And here Fuller certainly delivers: the entire tone of the article is one of disappointment at the Buddhists and how “many Muslims are worried.”  His closing paragraph is of “a Muslim vendor in the city’s central market” who spoke “in a whisper” saying “I’m really frightened. We tell the children not to go outside unless absolutely necessary.”

Thus while Myanmar’s Buddhists fight for their right to survive against an ever encroaching Islam, the NYT does what it does best—distort reality to make it fit the mainstream media’s world of make believe, in this case, that Muslims are always innocent and misunderstood victims.

Postscript: Ralph Sidway reminds me that Indonesian priest, Fr Daniel Byantoro, has written the following applicable words:

For thousands of years my country (Indonesia) was a Hindu Buddhist kingdom.  The last Hindu king was kind enough to give a tax exempt property for the first Muslim missionary to live and to preach his religion. Slowly the followers of the new religion were growing, and after they became so strong the kingdom was attacked, those who refused to become Muslims had to flee for their life to the neighboring island of Bali or to a high mountain of Tengger, where they have been able to keep their religion until now. Slowly from the Hindu Buddhist Kingdom, Indonesia became the largest Islamic country in the world. If there is any lesson to be learnt by Americans at all, the history of my country is worth pondering upon. We are not hate mongering, bigoted people; rather, we are freedom loving, democracy loving and human loving people. We just don’t want this freedom and democracy to be taken away from us by our ignorance and misguided ‘political correctness’, and the pretension of tolerance.

      what is your point?
Are you a muslim or a muslim apologist. ? I adore the “New York times” but what would a dumb muslim?muslim apologist know?? I thought that you Muslims just wipe your butt with your hand??

  • pogee

Another “on the mark” article, Mr. Ibrahim! We note, with deep sadness, that the NY Times has never represented the fundamental tenets of Journalism 101—I was one for 40 years—which posit that a reporter must give the facts, be objective, provide equality of arguments to both sides and their legitimate represents, and do so in a way that does not lead, but enlightens, where the reader is allowed to form his/her own opinions. Since the early ’30s, at a minimum, The Times has allowed its reporters to get away with blatantly subjectivity.

  • calico_kitty

Sadly, I don’t think a lot of Americans will wake up to the reality that is jihadi terrorism until it lands squarely and viciously on their doorstep…all the rest of us can do is to continue speaking the truth and urging people to educate themselves on the stark realities of what this so-called “religion” really is. My prayers are with the Buddhists.

    • crankywhitewoman

It already landed on the doorstep on 9/11. Message not received by the general populace thanks to a politically correct and corrupt media.

  • Rahil Mahdi Shad

Actually Islam isn’t a bad religion quite possibly the best. Plus you cant judge a religion by its people if we did that Christianity would’ve been ruined by Hitler and 88 percent of all terror attacks since 1995 have been by nonmuslims. If it were so bad why is it the largest growing religion in the world. most of its converts are white American and European women and black people. Women are its biggest converts and if all muslims were terrorists the western world would have been destroyed a long time ago. About 2 billion people on the planet are muslim 20 thousand every year in America convert to islam. The most prosperous societies have been Islamic and without islam science as we know it wouldnt exist and the renaissance that began the western world wouldn’t either. Most of modern sciences founding fathers were muslim and islam pressed for the rights of women and slaves before any one else did. We cant say islam is detrimental to western society without paying homage to the contributions muslims made in the western world.

    • Johnathan Read

The main contribution by muslims to the western world is terrorism at it’s worst.

Thanks to muslims the west has been exposed to gender apartheid, creed apartheid, misogyny, honor killings, clitordectomies, death for apostasy ,arranged marriages, limb amputations, stonings,et al?

      Under Sharia law:

There is no freedom of religion

There is no freedom of speech

There is no freedom of the press

There is no equality of people (a non-muslim is never equal to a muslim

There are no equal rights for women

      Women can be beaten

Non-muslims can not own any firearms

There is no democracy and all governments must be ruled by Sharia

There is no equal protection for different classes of people. Justice is dualistic … one set of laws for muslims males and a different set of laws for muslim females and non-muslims.

    • Darrius Jeddburgh

ahhh yes, founded by a mass murdering serial rapist pedophile psychotic psychopath slave owner assassin and torturer, whose followers are so deranged as to think that it was the worlds best example of humanity. They follow in it’s footsteps, waging war on normal humans for 1400 yrs. Your lies go well with your retarded assumptions, a true example of the filth that is islam { taqiya}.

    • SteveFinSC

Your statement is a multiplicity of lies. In fact the only statement you make that even approaches the truth is:
“Women are its biggest converts…” Yes, because many Western women are stupid enough to date and marry Muslim men which necessitates conversion.
Anyway, I’ll take the rest in turn:
      > Actually Islam isn’t a bad religion quite possibly the best. – Your opinion as a Muslim. Not shared by very many non-Muslims particularly the ones Muslims are persecuting.
      > Plus you cant judge a religion by its people if we did that Christianity would’ve been ruined by Hitler… – Hilter was a pagan at best and an atheist at worst. He may have been raised as a Catholic, but he wasn’t a Christian in any way, shape or form.
      >… and 88 percent of all terror attacks since 1995 have been by nonmuslims. – Not so. Islamic terrorists have carried out over 21,000 attacks just since 9/11/01. The only way you make this claim is that you think the US and its allies are terrorists for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
      > If it were so bad why is it the largest growing religion in the world. – Simple, Muslims kill anyone who converts; they imprison anyone who attempts to convert others to some other religion; they drive non-Muslims out of the areas they control – as presented in this article.
      > most of its converts are white American and European women and black people. Women are its biggest converts…- See my comment above about women. As for Blacks, some Blacks in America are seeking something which they view as authentically not White. Some view Christianity as a “White” religion. Islam is seen as non-White. Additionally since modern Islam (there’s an oximoron) portrays itself as the victim, it attracts converts who, for whatever reason, also view themselves as victims (e.g., some American Blacks).
      > and if all muslims were terrorists the western world would have been destroyed a long time ago. – Yes, it very nearly was destroyed in the 8th century when Europe was still in the Dark Ages and disunited. The last Muslim invasion of Europe was defeated at the gates of Vienna in 1683. This was a time of great militancy among Muslims.
      > About 2 billion people on the planet are muslim – That’s about 500 million too high.
      > 20 thousand every year in America convert to islam – Instinctively I doubt this, but haven’t researched it to find out.
      > The most prosperous societies have been Islamic… – Perhaps prior to the 14th century this was true. Since then much of the worst poverty on the planet can be associated with Muslim countries. You see it’s easy to be properous when you’re pillaging your neighbors’ wealth. After a conquest, the new Muslim rulers taxed the indigenous non-Muslims into poverty or conversion. Once everyone had converted or was too poor to pay much tax, the jihad would crank up again. Jihad ebbed and flowed based on the need of the Muslim ruling class for more booty. When they needed more money, they just attacked the next non-Muslim country. By the 14th Century, the Europeans stopped the Muslim advance into Europe and so the standard of living in the Caliphate began to decline.
      > …and without islam science as we know it wouldnt exist and the renaissance that began the western world wouldn’t either. – Obviously you’ve been in contact with NASA. This is totally untrue, again especially after the 14th century. If Muslims contributed to any future advancement it was by translating and thereby preserving older Greek (Byzantine) and Persian learning. The threat of Muslim attack helped create more centralized governments in Europe in the 9th century and the need for technological advancement for warfare drove a lot of the science and engineering.
      > Most of modern sciences founding fathers were muslim… – Oh like Archimedes, Newton, Einstein, Galileo, Copernicus, etc. Most of the Islamic pioneers of science were in areas taken over by Muslims – like Persia and you’re simply laying claim to their scientic traditions as Islamic when they are not.
      > and islam pressed for the rights of women and slaves before any one else did. – As the leading slavers on planet earth in the past and now, Muslims are really big on the rights of slaves. In Islamic culture women seem to have the right to remain silent, the right to do exactly what their fathers and husbands say, the right to stay home and never show their faces in public, the right to have their genitals mutilated, etc. Remember, at a recent Women Conference held in Saudi Arabia, no women were even allowed to attend. Yeah, you guys are great about women’s rights.
      > We cant say islam is detrimental to western society without paying homage to the contributions muslims made in the western world. – Oh yes we can! As your immigrants to the West work overtime to destroy Western Civilization, I think we’ll reserve judgment on any alleged contributions Islam has made.
It is a fundamental part of Islamic tradition to lie to your enemies to get what you want. A great many Westerners – especially in the US – know that.
We will not go quietly into the night.

        Excellent post!

      • Guest

One more point. Many people like to point out that there are billion Muslims. Well there were also more than a billion Commies if you add the population of China, Russia, Eastern Europe and other Communist countries. Did that mean they were right? First of all they failed their own people and many 10s of millions of people were killed by famines and oppression and misplaced idealism. Then the idealogy went poof as it was shown to be an utter failure. So, don’t tell us that just due to numbers something is right.

Galileo, in his time, was the only human being who had the proof that the earth revolved around the sun. Every other human being on the planet believed otherwise and yet he was castigated by religion. Need I say more about how numbers do not equate with correctness?

Life is too short to even begin a discussion with someone who is as deluded as you are.

    • ReyR

Islam is as dangerous in a man as rabies in a dog. Islam is cancer of human soul. Islam is a death cult. After islamists replace other people, they begin destroying each other. Muslims have made no contribution to the Western world, if we leave terrorism aside. Muslim immigrants are a parasitic burden on every society, and when they come to a nice place they turn it quickly into a muslim snake pit. No shariah-infested so-called nation is livable, and this is why they sneak into our home countries. If islam were at least 10% as good as you try to paint it, why don’t we have any immigrants flowing from the civilized countries into the islamic world? Sooner or later, we are going to segregate again, and you guys will go back to your roots in yemen and morocco and pakistan, just where you belong, to rape your own womenfolk instead of ours. There you will be free to ass-lift in any street, nook and corner, and wail glory to your moon god at any hour, day or night.

all that islam has brought to the world is genocide, murder, massive pedophilia, honor killings, female genital mutilations. , gender apartheid, massive misogyny, with female imprisonment, mass murder, , female beating and torture and massive ignorance, and illiteracy

The Buddhists are massacring Muslims in Myanmar. Ibrahim’s attempt to defend them is despicable.

Muslims are massacring non Muslins all over the world ,Syria,Egypt, Libya, Nigeria,Indonesia and on and on and on.

    • Sintram

I can see no defence of buddhists massacring muslims in Ibrahims article.

What he is doing is simply setting the violence in perspective – something altogether lacking in the MSM coverage of the buddhist violence against muslims.

    • Alan

Natural Law gives the right of self defense to any one, anywhere in the world who is attacked by Islam…

    • pam jones indo

you muslim/and or muslim apologist, is the despicable one! Muslims have been murdering , raping, and committing genocide murdering over 300,000 innocent, non- muslims over these 1400 years. I am on the side of the Buddhists. Just look at Mahatma Gandhi. He just sold the Hindus and Sikhs and other religious minorities to the muslims to be murdered by the muslims.

      • meqmac

Pam, you and others here are very like the Nazis, in calling for the killing of Muslims. I am not a Muslim, I am not a Muslim apologist, IU write very critically about Islam (and have taught Islamic Studies at universities), and I have worked closely with Raymond Ibrahim in the past. But praising the killing of people and, as some here are saying, calling for genocide, is just as contemptible as the Nazi calls for the genocide of Jews, gypsies, homosexuals and others. It doesn’t matter what Muslims have done: you don’t need to lecture me on that since I probbaly know a vast amount more about Islamic violence than you or anyone else on this comments list. Did the Allies call for the killing of all Germans after WWII because of what the Nazis did? Aren’t you rather like Hamas etc., who call for the genocide of the Jews of Israel (or all round the world) because Israel defeated the Arabs in wars? You need to grow up morally and to understand that calling for genocide places you on a lower moral level to the vast majority of Muslims, who do not espouse violence. I try to work with reformist Muslims in order to advance a reformation within the religion. People like you simply pull the rug from beneath my feet. I am far from being a lover of Islam, but I can never stoop to your repugnant hatred of people whose only crime was to be born into a faith. Shame on you and on all the others who have sullied these pages with a sickening call for mass murder.

        • pam jones indo

I don’t care what you call yourself, muslim and/or muslim apologist, you are still part of the longest, largest, and most virulent, deadly, criminal organization in the world –to ever exist-islam!!! You can be a 2 cell amoeba (and one cell does not work) as far as I am concerned. Slither back to your place under that rock in hell from which your evil, pedophilia, murdering, genocidal leader, Muhammad slithered from 1400 years. Bye,bye, bye!!!!!!

Myanmar’s Buddhists know the best way to deal with Muslims is by killing everyone of them.

google, “reading habits muslims Arabs” , and it will take you to several articles that all basically say the same thing: that muslims do not read and are that they basically ignorant. You will find there this article entitled, “The sum of all fears: study shows that Arabs read 6 pages a year”. the study was done by arabs and appeared in the Arab news publication, “Al-Arabyia”. the study and the article, which came out in 2012, showed the following : Generally speaking, “Arab children read 6 minutes a year while Western children read like 12,000 minutes a year. Arab adults read like 6 pages a year while Adult Americans read about 11 books a year and British adults read about 7 books a year.

  • Khalid Izzeldin

It is sad how you describe Islam. Saying that
Buddhist monks are peaceful is just as ignorant as saying all Burmese are Buddhist
and peaceful; forgetting the military and its history, who they are and where
they come from, and what they did. There is nothing that justifies genocide, no
matter who is doing it against who. They should learn to accept living with
each other. There just as many bad Buddhists as there are bad Muslims. Each
person should be accountable for their own actions. There are no sides to take.
Justice must prevail. No burning of homes, no torture, no rape, no
displacement, no vandalism, no harassment, and no racism. Affirmative action,
inclusion, humility, understanding, harmony, coexistence, peace, and unity
should be preached and practiced by both. There is no “real threat”; that is just
    pure ignorance.

    • pam jones indo

google, this article from 2010 by one of the leading experts in Honor killing and gender apartheid, Dr. Phyllis Chesler is the author. Here is what her study showed at that time: 91% of all honor killings (murder) world wide, were committed by muslims, 84% of all honor killings (murder) here in North america were committed by muslims; and 96% of all honor killings (murders) were committed by mulsims. I am cheering for the Buddhist monks!!!
