The first time I heard about Khalid bin al-Walid—the 7th century Muslim jihadi affectionately known in Islamic history as “The Sword of Allah”—was when I was in college researching for my MA thesis on the Battle of Yarmuk, when the Muslims, under Khalid’s generalship, defeated the Byzantines in 636, opening the way for the historic Islamic conquests.
Nearly a decade and a half later, Khalid, that jihadi par excellence, has come to personify a dichotomy for me—how the jihad is understood in the West and how it really is: officially, Western academia, media, and politicians portray it as defensive war to protect Muslim honor and territory; in reality, however, jihad is all too often little more than a byword to justify the most primitive and barbaric passions of its potential recruits and practitioners.
Based on the English language sources I perused in college, Khalid was a heroic, no-nonsense kind of jihadi—fierce but fair, stern but just. He was the champion of the Apostasy Wars, when he slaughtered countless Arabs for trying to leave Islam after the death of Muhammad.
Modern day Muslims writing about Khalid—see for example Pakistani army lieutenant-general A.I Akram’s The Sword of Allah—had naught but praise for him, the scourge of infidels and apostates.
But as years went by, I came across more arcane and Arabic sources telling of the “darker side” of The Sword—a depraved and sadistic side.
For example, only recently I came across a video of a modern-day Egyptian Salafi explaining how Khalid raped Layla, the wife of Malik bin Nuwayra—but only after he severed her husband’s head, lit it on fire, and cooked his dinner on it.
Khalid was recalled and questioned by the caliph—not because he killed and dined on an apostate’s head and “married” his wife, but because some believed that Malik was still Muslim, not an apostate to be treated so, and that Khalid killed him on the accusation of apostasy only as a pretext to take possession of his wife, whose beauty was renowned.
In the words of Ibn Kathir’s authoritative historical tome, The Beginning and the End (al-bidaya we al-nihaya), “And he [Khalid] ordered his [Malik’s] head and he combined it with two stones and cooked a pot over them. And Khalid ate from it that night to terrify the apostate Arab tribes and others. And it was said that Malik’s hair created such a blaze that the meat was so thoroughly cooked.”
More eye-opening is the way the videotaped Egyptian cleric recounts this whole narrative with awe and admiration—boasting, for example, how that when Khalid entered the caliph’s tent for questioning he was “wearing armor all soaked and rusted from blood [of his enemies], with arrows sticking out of his turban.”
As for the near-cannibalistic meal that the Sword of Allah ate, the cleric complained that “People wonder how our lord Khalid could have eaten from such meat? Oh yes—he ate from it! Our lord Khalid had a very strong character, a great appetite, and everything! All to terrorize the desert Arabs [apostates]. The matter requires determination; these matters require strength—terrorism.”
Of course, all this accords with the Koran’s many commands to “strike terror” into the hearts of disbelievers, be they born infidels or apostates (see Koran 3:151, 8:12, 8:60).
Now, let us fast-forward to the modern era’s “Arab Spring” and U.S. support for “freedom-fighters” trying to “liberate” Syria (the official, Western narrative of the jihad), and let us reflect on its true nature—from a jihadi (ironically named “Khalid”) biting into the heart of a soldier (and thus striking terror into the hearts of Assad’s “apostate” regime) to Islamic clerics justifying rape and prostitution to gratify the many swords of Allah.
And at last, let us understand that the heartbeat of the jihad—sex, violence, and rapine—has scarcely changed in nearly fourteen centuries.

My family is from the Caribbean. Quite possible some ancestor(s) or other of ours were dragged on the same slave ship(s).
The lesson I learned from that though was that ‘white supremacy’ was the enemy, not ‘white people’ as such. So I’m against all forms of supremacist ideas and I challenge everything.
Living as a 2nd or 3rd class ‘citizen’ or subject, is a whim away from dying a 1st class death, or living as a slave. & creating value systems that have major areas of taboo that go unchallenged, means it’s hard to compete on, or create a level playing field.

If you ever truly felt that Islam was not for you, your faith itself says that your wife would be obliged to consider your relationship as unlawful and your kids could not consider you to be a rightful guardian or protector. Yes, there are people in the world being killed or threatened with death for apostasy from Islam. They also face other forms of persecution. Read State Department on religious freedom in numerous Muslim-ruled countries. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch also detail persecution of apostates from Islam. Other mass murders of Jews in Arab lands occurred in Morocco in the 8th century, where whole communities were wiped out by Muslim ruler Idris I; North Africa in the 12th century, where the Almohads either forcibly converted or decimated several communities; Libya in 1785, where Ali Burzi Pasha murdered hundreds of Jews; Algiers, where Jews were massacred in 1805, 1815 and 1830 and Marrakesh, Morocco, where more than 300 hundred Jews were murdered between 1864 and 1880.
Decrees ordering the destruction of synagogues were enacted in Egypt and Syria
(1014, 1293-4, 1301-2), Iraq (854859, 1344) and Yemen (1676). Despite the Qur’an’s purported prohibition, Jews were forced to convert to Islam or face death in Yemen (1165 and 1678), Morocco (1275, 1465 and 1790-92) and Baghdad (1333 and 1344). Armenians, followed by the first formal genocide of the 20th century, in 1915, at which time they slaughtered an additional 600,000 to 800,000 Armenians.
Contemporary accounts from European diplomats confirm that these brutal massacres were perpetrated in the context of a formal Jihad against the Armenians who had attempted to throw off the yoke of Dhimmitude by seeking equal rights and autonomy. Regarding the 1894-96 massacres, the Turkish-speaking interpreter of the British embassy reported:
…[The perpetrators] are guided in their general action by the prescriptions of the Sheri [Sharia] Law. The scholar Bat Yeor confirms this reasoning, noting that the Armenian quest for reforms invalidated their “legal status,” which involved a “contract” (i.e., with their Muslim Turkish rulers).

Do you believe in the hadiths and agree with the accuracy of
the occurrences recorded in the Sunnah? If not, how do you reconcile that with the injunction from the Koran to take Mohammed as a “Most wonderful pattern of conduct” (ie as an example to follow). Why would you ignore the examples of his conduct, beliefs and behaviour? Do you believe the ‘authenticity of Bukhari and

For example the passage that you mentioned, Christians “will not grieve”, but Mohammed says that the trinity is blasphemous, the bible (Injeel) has been hidden and the Torah has been adulterated, so in what way are the Christians that Mohammed describes who, “will not grieve”, like the Christians of today?
He also says that for calling Jesus the ‘son of god’ (and the Jews for calling someone named ‘Uzair’, the son of god) they are akin to ‘Mushrikeen’, guilty of ‘associating partners with god’, emulating the idolatry of old and earning for Christians/Jews the ‘curse of Allah’. Indeed it is a “lie against god” of which there is “no greater sin”.
This is reinforced by several of the hadiths that state that
“following laws made by men (whether they be politicians priests or rabbis), is the same as worshipping them”.
Conversely, the Quran in many places sets out the criterion
for ‘belief’, not least belief in the prophethood of Mohammed, the laws and rules he gave (on god’s behalf) and the condition of obeying him. None of which qualify Jews or Christians.
Sura’s 2 & 3 as far as I know were early Medinan (Yatthrib) surahs which were recited at a time when Mohammed’s control over the
city was not fully secure and he was trying to sound conciliatory, reaching out to try to convince the Jews and Christians to come over to his new faith. If you follow the Sunnah, then you know how that turned out, with the destruction of the Banu Qurayyza and the Banu Nadir.
No it doesn’t make sense to kill all non-believers. Better to control them, degrade and exploit them with the Jizya, for all they are

You have provided some points, which I have answered and put forward my take on the sources, with some questions to you and points of my own (and my methodology), none of which you have chosen to acknowledge. But in conversations you also learn something of the person you are speaking to and something about what they believe. Ignorant? Subjective. Kafir has many other aspects to it that Mohammed mentions in the Koran- ignorance (being one of them), arrogance, untrustworthiness being a few others. Please correct me if I am remembering incorrectly. Did you tell them the full meaning of Kafir, or is that just between you and the ‘mumin’?
Your question alludes to a fundamental difference I have
with Mohammed. That is the difference between ‘knowledge’ and ‘belief’. Scientific knowledge builds upon itself, even as scepticism is encouraged. Knowledge is something that can be tested and measured. Sure, a person could refute the
theory of gravity and use it as the basis for the propogation of a new society and power structure, but unfortunately they would come across others who wedded to the theory of gravity would seek to disprove this reversion through
experimentation.
If it came to blows, I would venture that the ‘gravitists’
would quite conclusively prove the existence and dimensions of gravity- by using it to guide mortar bombs unrelentingly on the ‘non-gravitist’ opposition. These are two ways in which scientific knowledge is proven and the reason why we do not revert back to 7th century (or 1st century) knowledge, once a sufficient body of scientific knowledge is created, tested
and preserved.
Belief however is different. It is never confirmed and for a
believer to demand confirmation can be seen as a lack of faith, or blasphemous. So belief is not bound by the same pattern of theory, interrogation, modification and cumulative development as natural and social sciences. At any point one set of beliefs is the conjecture of an individual (or a group of
individuals). God does not do interviews, so ‘Islam’ is defined by Mohammed.
Any thought and Ijtihad since then is simply an attempt to determine Mohammed’s perogative. A process that for many became redundant about 1000 years ago or more (because the major issues were already decided).
For this reason, your question would be relevant to the
cumulative knowledge/theory set of science, but in regard to belief is inappropriate- as in religion the advancement of time, can just as easily indicate corruption and the encroachment of ‘cultural’, ‘societal’ or ‘external’ imperfections, contrary to the ‘will of god’.
Mohammed conflated these two terms, calling belief, knowledge and later Muslims have compounded the error (as I see it) with such things as so-called Quranic or Hadith ‘sciences’ and in teaching their (subjective)
religion to children as an (objective) truth.

I’ll give u the condensed version then- Many Muslim majority
countries have laws (apostasy and blasphemy), legal discrimination against the religious practice non-Muslims, actively preventing Muslims leaving the faith, or from hearing the ideas of others (faiths and philosophies) that might challenge Mohammedism (‘Islam’). These rules come straight from Mohammed’s mouth (according to the Koran/hadith), and the actions of the caliphs (Abu-Bakr onwards), as in the ‘Ridda wars’. That does not show any confidence in the strength of ‘Islamic’ thought. Your premise “You can’t stop Islam” is weak. I think it gets a pass right now, because most non-Muslims have no idea what it says and most Muslims are protected from the challenge of any other ideas until they are thoroughly indoctrinated and loyal to the (political) cause. But many are striving to make a level playing field of ideas, so this is not always the case.
Religion (belief) and science (knowledge) are not the same.
The Jizya will always be relevant because it is from the mouth of Mohammed. Religious practice is not bound by the past practitioners, (that means mixing it with ‘tradition’ & ‘culture’). The founder, Mohammed is the most relevant arbiter of what is the ‘permissible’ practices of the faith.

So again you are not reading the Qu’ran you are reading a translation of the Qu’ran. And the Koran is one of the worst translations out there. That’s why when that fake fool preacher down South wanted to burn all the Korans, I was saying that’s great he’ll be doing us a favor. That horrible translation shouldn’t even be in circulation. Anyway until you follow the necessary steps to learn how to read Qu’ranic Arabic you simply don’t know what you are talking about. And the same goes with the Hadith.

I wrote the word Koran, but the book I am actually reading from is entitled ‘Qur’an’. Several of them have explanations and one in particular has the original Arabic, transliteration into the ‘Roman’ text and a translation into English. i have read several Qurans.
So god sent a messenger to all the people that came before in their own language (which is claimed in the Koran/quran, but he stopped at Mohammed and did not bother to create a translation that perfectly conveys the meaning? Jizya was imposed on Christians in all traditional Muslim-ruled states, including when there was no Caliphate (and there was no unified caliphate after 10th century), and when the Muslim state did not even claim to be a caliphate.
