While Western media, following Al Jazeera’s lead, were demonizing the Egyptian military for breaking up the Muslim Brotherhood’s “sit in” camps where Brotherhood supporters were “holding vigil,” they failed to mention that these Brotherhood supporters were also torturing, raping, and mass murdering people in the name of Islam and/or Brotherhood.
Most recently, yesterday afternoon, Farag Fadl Mubarak, assistant police officer, died of the wounds he received weeks earlier from Brotherhood supporters when clearing out the camps in Raba’a al-Adawiya and elsewhere. According to Veto Gate, he had been “exposed to beatings and torture at the hands of terrorist allies affiliated with the Brotherhood organization; they stabbed him with a metal object before cutting his tongue out.” The report adds that “the Brotherhood’s terrorist allies also killed 13 police officers when they stormed a station while wounding 12 others.”
Cutting appendages off was not an uncommon phenomenon in the Brotherhood camps. Earlier, another man accused of stealing inside Raba’a al-Adawiya (before it was cleared out) was tortured and had his finger chopped off. He appears in this video—his face beaten to a bloody pulp—describing his ordeal.
Like so many in Raba’a, he was there not as a Brotherhood supporter, but because he worked in the area. Accused of stealing, he insisted he was innocent. When his accusers refused to relent, he said, “Fine, if I’m a thief, hand me over to police,” but they said, “No, we will hand you over to Allah.” He was taken to a room and tortured for fourteen hours, including by being sprayed with water and repeatedly electrocuted and stabbed and sliced with a switchblade (in minute 3:47 he exposes his mutilated chest). Then, his “pious” tormentors supplicated their god by saying, “In the name of Allah,” before hacking his finger off.
